The young Marine will be buried in his uniform I feel sure. He was not allowed to wear that uniform to his high school graduation - but he will wear it in his casket.

What difference does it make that his high school turned down his request to graduate in his uniform?

Young men and women who chose to join the military are unlike the rest of us. Theirs is a serious commitment - it takes years away from an otherwise free to chose and free to do daily existence. Theirs is a serious decision as they pledge their very lives for their country, for others.

A schools duty is to prepare youth for tomorrow. Most of those who graduate have no clear vision of what their future may bring, but scholastic achievement is honored. It would seem to me that a school would be proud to acknowledge having helped develope not just minds but young people committed to serving others.

Honor them - now.

RIP Lance Cpl. Brandon Garabrant and the two others who died by his side.

NH Marine Killed In Afghanistan

A Marine from New Hampshire has been killed in Afghanistan.

n Garabrant, 19, was one of three U.S. service members killed by a roadside bomb Friday morning.

"The entire State of New Hampshire is devastated by the tragic loss of Lance Corporal Brandon Garabrant, who was bravely serving his nation in Afghanistan," Governor Maggie Hassan said in a statement. "Our service men and women courageously sacrifice every day to protect their fellow citizens and defend the enduring value of freedom that is our very core, and in doing so, Lance Corporal Garabrant made the ultimate sacrifice."

Garabrant graduated from ConVal Regional High School in Peterborough last year. He had requested to wear his uniform during graduation, but the school did not allow it.

The school has released a statement reacting to Garabrant's death.

"On behalf of the entire ConVal community I extend my deepest sympathy to Brandon's family and friends," Principal Brian Pickering said. "We are all shocked and deeply saddened by his passing and we are incredibly grateful for his service to our country."

Garabrant was also a volunteer firefighter in Temple, New Hampshire.
