On Feder's Top 10 Reasons Islam Might Not Be a Religion of Peace

In one of those "very sad but unfortunately true" circumstances that the world finds itself in, Don Feder - a former Boston Herald writer and syndicated columnist, observes with the rest of us that hardly a day goes by that evil isn't perpetrated in the name of Islam somewhere in the world, although when it comes to denouncing same, moderate Muslims are mostly AWOL. Certainly it was this situation that he had in mind when he wrote, "Top 10 Reasons Islam Might Not Be a Religion of Peace."

It should not escape us that the situations that motivated Feder to write his article are as frustrating to many moderate Muslims that are either afraid to speak out, don't really know where to begin, or are truly trying to make a difference but feeling overwhelmed by those that commit and "perpetuate evil in the name of their Islam." Take for example - Drima, at The Sudanese Thinker.

As an example of the frustration that many moderate Muslims are feeling, a close Muslim friend of mine recently wrote in an email to me:

It's really hard for me to voice my peacefull opinions about Islam. I myself personally feel depressed and hopeless sometimes. I mean it's as if I write a truly sincere piece about the real meaning of Jihad in Islam and how the Quran is against terrorism and out of no where, kaboom there goes another terrorist attack which just makes me seem so naive and out of touch.

The truth is that we Muslims are drifting apart. We the non-literal interpretors defintely have a big gap that seperates us from the hatefull literal interpretors. I just hate it when we're all labeled as Muslims because to me those people really aren't Muslims. They're just a crazy bunch of bloody butchers. However everything they do is for Allah they claim. I say that Allah is defintely angry at what they do.

I understand (how what we moderate Muslims say about the bloody butchers) seems to be so out of touch (to non-Muslims). I don't blame (them). Septermber 11th changed everything.

For me, the email is evidence that truly moderate Muslims exist, but also that they need the help of their fellow moderate Muslims in closing ranks and speaking out, while being given a lot of support from their non-Muslim friends. The radicals are the enemies of us all. Meanwhile, many moderate Muslims are left with hoping that someday soon the peaceful Islam they knew as children would find its way back into the hearts of men that commit such violence in the name of God.
