At War With Iran
As all but the most clueless among us knows, Iran has been at war with the U.S. since 1979. Today, in his informative piece, "Iran Wants War," Jules Crittenden raises the ultimate question: If the value of the blood and treasure we are expending in Iraq and our vital national interests there are not now evident, just what is it going to take?
Skeptics, please note that Iran also wants a nuclear weapon. As stated here earlier, U.S. naval and land forces appear to be moving into position that could destory much of Iran's WMD development capability and air defenses, while defending Iraq and our forces there from a flanking attack by Iran's proxies (see above). As Jules points out, the key issue is the question of will. We have the ability to "to bring something approaching peace and stability to Iraq, if we have the will." We can let Iran defeat us in Iraq - as they are doing, without even fighting us, or we can win - again, it's a matter of our will:There are some people who are of the opinion this is our own doing, because we invaded Iraq. That position ignores the fact that Saddam had corrupted the sanctions regime and was awaiting its imminent collapse to resume his WMD programs. It ignores the fact that the Iranian nuclear program was already underway. It would have been a race to see who gets there first.
Just as we have the ability to bring something approaching peace and stability to Iraq, a nation that was doomed to tear itself apart violently on sectarian lines, just as it is doing now, with Iranian meddling, in our absence. With our presence, we can keep it a controlled burn and even begin to stamp it out. If we have the will.
As we asked in a June 30, 2006 post, "Is there any wonder why Iran believes that it can continue unimpeded and immune from repercussions from its actions - given its long history of lies, deception, cheat, and attacks against the U.S., all while we have done nothing more than sat back and take it?
From the Washington Times: Casey cites Iran hand in attacks by Iraqi Shi'ites.
The top U.S. commander in Iraq said yesterday [June 22] that covert Iranian troops are training brethren Iraqi Shi'ites on how to attack U.S. and coalition troops. From The Wall Street Journal: Khobar Towers by Louis J. Freeh.
Ten years ago today [June 25], acting under direct orders from senior Iranian government leaders, the Saudi Hezbollah detonated a 25,000-pound TNT bomb that killed 19 U.S. airmen in their dormitory at Khobar Towers in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. The blast wave destroyed Building 131 and grievously wounded hundreds of additional Air Force personnel. It also killed an unknown number of Saudi civilians in a nearby park. From CNN in May 2003: Iran responsible for 1983 Marine barracks bombing, judge rules.
Iran is responsible for the 1983 suicide bombing of a U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, that killed 241 American servicemen, a U.S. District Court judge ruled Friday. And here is the Answers.com entry for the 1979 Iran hostage crisis.
Remember this from CNN back in June 06? No quick Iranian reply on nuclear offer.
Iran and the world's leading industrialized democracies staked out conflicting positions Thursday on when Tehran should respond to a U.N. proposal concerning the country's nuclear program.Again, as we and others continue to ask: When is the American public going to stand up and say enough is enough? It's time to decide that we're not going to play Iran's game anymore, especially while Iran stalls, cheats, lies, and deceives the West as it races to the development of nuclear weapons and war with the West. The Western powers said Thursday they expected Iran's response to come by Wednesday, when the European Union's foreign minister, Javier Solana, and Iran's nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani, meet, The Associated Press reported.
But hours after that announcement, Iran's foreign minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, said Tehran would not complete its review of the U.N. offer until August.
Mottaki's comments are in line with those made earlier by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who said he did not plan to respond to the U.N. proposal until August 22.
Be fooled not: Ahmadinejad fully intends to carry out his apocalyptic dreams of Armageddon.
