Segregated Muslim cemetery in Madrid
The city council of Madrid will donate 10,000 sq. meters of one of its cemeteries to the Muslim communitiy. It will be enclosed, separated from the main part and will have a different entrance. It will also be directly run by Muslims, who will decide who has the right to be buried in it.
This concession was originally requested by the socialist party. But the Popular Party (center-right), currently ruling the city council, has taken it enthusiastically, even pretending they had already agreed on it with the Muslim community when the socialist proposal was presented. The major of Madrid, Ruiz Gallardon, has been frequently criticised by many colleagues from his party because of his progressive pretentiousness.
Historically, the Spanish left had insisted on the secularisation of cemeteries, so that all citizens would be buried in the same place, irrespective of their faith. In former times, the minority of non-Catholics had to be buried in separated cemeteries. It was during the Second Republic when the left enforced the secularisation of cemeteries. 70 years latter the Spanish left calls for faith-based segregation of cemeteries, favouring a dangerous cult.
