Israel Expresses Regret About Killing of UN Peacekeepers

According to VOA, Israel's prime minister has expressed "deep sorrow" over the killing of four United Nations military observers by an Israeli air strike in Lebanon, and has ordered an investigation into the incident that killed "observers" from China, Finland, Austria and Canada.

At the same time, the statement says Israel is dismayed at Mr. Annan's comment that the U.N. post in Lebanon was deliberately targeted by Israel. Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor says Mr. Annan's comments make no sense.

"Why on earth would we deliberately target U.N. observers?" he asked. "What good would that do either on the military or the political level, because it so obvious that this would be harmful. Of course it is a tragedy for the observers and their bereaved families and we truly share their sorrow and we deeply regret the incident. It was obviously a fatal mistake. The Army will be conducting an investigation and the results will be made public."

Greg Strange offers at BNN that there are two things going on here: the fog of war and the fog of Kofi's thinking.

In the fog of war unexpected things sometimes happen during the chaos, mistakes are made, wrong targets are hit, sometimes there's friendly fire, things can go horribly wrong.

In the fog of Kofi's thinking, Israel is the real threat to world peace, not the terrorists or their state sponsors. Israel is the one who should show restraint, not Hezbollah who has fired thousands of rockets and missiles into Israel for the crime of daring to exist. Israel is the bad guy for bombing Lebanese infrastructure, but Lebanon is utterly blameless for allowing itself to be hijacked by terrorists whose goal is the destruction of Israel.

It's Kofi in la-la land, a parallel universe where up is down and down is up and everything is nonsense. But trying to destroy the vicious terrorist organization Hezbollah is a serious, no-nonsense endeavor for which Israel ought to be thanked, not condemned. The last thing Israel needs is Annan's bug-eyed accusations. It only leads to more bad press and the world is full of people stupid enough to believe it.

Acerbic wit aside, there's no question that Kofi has openly revealed his deep and ongoing bias against Israel, and has once again contributed to his own irrevalence and that of the UN's. On the other hand, I still want to see and hear the results of Israel's certain-to-occur investigation before I offer further comment - something Kofi should have done before flapping his stupid mouth prior to engaging his brain.
