Muslims kill nun, Pope apologizes

The jihadi reaction from Muslims continues today with the killing in Somalia of an Italian nun, in response to Pope Benedict's statements about Islam this week. The nun was shot IN THE BACK at a hospital. The Pope had an opportunity to stand firm FOR Christianity and against the violence of Islam, and he caved under the pressure. I'm not Catholic, but I am Christian, and the Pope finds himself speaking for Christians on the world stage. Some are saying his apology was for the REACTION to his words, and not for the words themselves. But this is what he said:

Pope Benedict XVI said Sunday that he was "deeply sorry" about the angry reaction to his recent remarks about Islam, which he said came from a text that didn't reflect his personal opinion. "These (words) were in fact a quotation from a Medieval text which do not in any way express my personal thought," Benedict told pilgrims at his summer palace outside Rome. source

That is clearly backtracking and a full apology for what he said. Some Muslims have accepted his apology but others say it does not go far enough. The Pope is a former theology professor and enforcer of Vatican dogma. He knew exactly what he was saying in the speech. Leaders like Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel and politicians in Italy rushed to Benedict's defense, supporting what he had said.

The pope's secretary of state said in a statement that Benedict's position on Islam was unquestionably in line with the Vatican's traditional teaching that the Rome "esteems Muslims, who adore the only God."

This reassertion of a heresy - that the LORD God of Israel and Allah, the Moon God of Arabia, are the same being - was not enough to placate the latest fit of Islamic apoplexy.

Notwithstanding the unwillingness of many western nations to defy politically correctness, by today's definition - and according to the criteria used in various Judeo-Christian countries - Mohammed, were he alive in the 21st century, would be labeled a terrorist, and states subscribing to his evil and inhuman teachings would be designated (as a few are) terror-supporting states and members of an axis of evil. Muslims are not satisfied, 'cleric Ahmad Khatami warned that if the Pope did not apologize, "Muslims' outcry will continue until he fully regrets his remarks. ... The Pope should fall on his knees in front of a senior Muslim cleric and try to understand Islam"'.

He may have come closer than any modern-day pope to saying sorry in public for something he has said. His predecessor John Paul II made public apologies for the church's historic errors, such as the Inquisition and its failings in World War Two. source

Peggy Noonan on Fox News this morning said she believes the Pope 'said exactly what he intended to say'. I think she is correct. The fact that he is backtracking from those comments is very sad. It is the kind of PC crap I would expect from some, but not from him.
