On Oriana Fallaci And Freedom's Zone

A reader emailed us and asked why we have an image of Oriana Fallaci on our site. So I thought I'd call it to everyone's attention that Freedom's Zone is a coalition blog that was co-founded by Italian and American bloggers in response to a decision by an Italian court to prosecute Oriana for defaming Islam. She died of cancer on September 15, 2006, at age 77. You'll find her obituary from Times Online here.

In her book, "The Force of Reason" she provided an accurate explanation of why Europe has decided not to defend its identity and to surrender to what she calls the "Islamic invasion." With the sarcasm and uniquely direct style that characterized her work, Fallaci carefully examined the historic and political reasons that have led Europeans to vilify their own culture, consistently embrace anti-Americanism, and pander to every request from the increasingly powerful Muslim communities that populate the dying Old Continent. Her analysis does not leave much hope for the future of Europe, although she takes a far more optimistic position on her adopted country, the United States.

We all miss her, and will remember her as we attempt in our small ways, to continue the battle against the Islamist threat that she engaged with such vigor.
